Marston Park welcomes the arrival of the first of many collaborations with artists, architects, designers and ingenious folk from the world over.
Futuro at Marston Park see’s artist Craig Barnes bringing his iconic piece of 1960’s pop architecture to a secluded woodland spot on our lakeside. Located between Frome and Bruton in Somerset, Marston Park is a playground for creativity which hosts performances, exhibitions and the fruition of projects in it’s creative studios.
The Futuro House was dreamt up by a Finnish architect named Matti Suuronen as a rural holiday retreat, easily transportable to the most beautiful locations, which would be difficult to build on otherwise.
Developing on the tradition and of Nordic summer cabins, the Futuro House was also conceived to weather out winter conditions and act as a Ski Lodge.
Commercially launched in 1968 the Futuro House encapsulated the 60’s pop culture zeitgeist in architecture, something rarely seen elsewhere in the world.
Whilst the world went crazy for the Futuro House, few people bought them, and as such, only 68 are known to still exist worldwide today.
Futuro Houses’ are museum quality pieces of design history, and as such you will find them in the collections of the Boijmans Museum in Rotterdam, Die Niue Sammlung in Munich, WeeGee in Helsinki, and many other major institutions and private collections worldwide.
Unless you want to spend your summer in Russia (which we are sure is lovely), this Futuro is the only Futuro House you can stay in worldwide.
Add to that the loving restoration given to this Futuro House by artist Craig Barnes, and you have an experience that is truly out of this world. Over the best part of the last decade, Barnes has been painstakingly restoring it to its original glory since rescuing it from dilapidation in South Africa, and bringing it back to the UK.
After a couple of London rooftop landings at Matt’s Gallery and Central Saint Martins, it summered in Le Havre, France during 2018 where 30,000 people visited it, eight at a time, for five minute intervals.
At Marston Park for a limited time only, you can enjoy spaceship style Scandi hygge living all by yourself for as many nights as you care to book. This is an extremely rare opportunity to stay the night in this incredible piece of history, set within the idyllic lakeside surrounds of Marston Park.
Futuro at Marston Park comes with its own private facilities, set in its own glade with lake views. bathrobes, private bathroom facilities, linen and towels, piping hot shower, mood lighting, studio monitor speakers, and outdoor seating with a fire pit.
For art and design lovers, this corner of Somerset is becoming something of a mecca, with Marston Park set between the emerging creative and counter-culture hub of Frome, and the idyllic town of Bruton, with its plethora of independent shops, the legendary At The Chapel, No. 1 Bruton, The Newt, and of course Hauser & Wirth’s Somerset outpost at Durslade Farm.
This Futuro House has one main sleeping space with a double bed, and then flexible space for either two adults or two children.
A booking allows access to the landscape and facilities including the bar, restaurant, showers & loos, and entertainment.
Please note there are no cooking facilities for guests but food and drink is available all day on site.
Following in the spirit of Marston Park and traditions that Craig Barnes has established, this Futuro House can also be hired as a creative, performance or events space. Contact us for more information.
