What is a Futuro House?

The iconic Futuro House was dreamt up by Finnish architect, Matti Suuronen, as a rural holiday retreat. Its main feature is that it’s easily transportable to the most beautiful and remote locations.

Suuronen built on the tradition of Nordic summer cabins, designing the Futuro to weather winter conditions and act as a ski lodge. Commercially launched in 1968, the Futuro House encapsulated the 60s pop culture zeitgeist in architecture, something rarely seen elsewhere in the world.

Futuro House in the UK

The world went crazy for the Futuro House but only a few people bought them and only 68 are known to still exist worldwide today. You can find these pieces of design history in museum collections, including the Boijmans Museum in Rotterdam, Die Niue Sammlung in Munich, WeeGee in Helsinki, and many other major institutions and private collections worldwide.

The Futuro at Marston Park has been brought to the south west of England by the artist, Craig Barnes. Over the best part of the last decade, Barnes has painstakingly restored it to its original glory, rescuing it from dilapidation in South Africa, and bringing it to the UK. The Futuro did a couple of London rooftop landings at Matt’s Gallery and Central Saint Martins. In 2018 it summered in Le Havre, France, where 30,000 people visited it.

Marston Park and Futuro House

There are only two Futuro Houses worldwide that you can stay in. One is in Russia and one is right here at Marston Park, set in our secluded woodland on the edge of the lake. Spending the night in this unique spaceship-style accommodation is a truly magical experience. As you view the beautiful natural vistas of Marston Park through the porthole-like windows, you cannot help but feel that, at any moment, you could take off - transported to another world, or time. You can have it all to yourself for however many nights you’d like or the Futuro House can also be hired as a creative, performance or events space.
